Ice Lollies Jelly Babies Liquorice Allsorts Stones Angel Skeleton Pink House

Some of Cally Trench's prints are concerned with the collection and arrangement of objects from her childhood - such as liquorice allsorts, ice lollies, jelly babies, and shells. Other prints, including Angel Skeleton, explore the way that fictions from the past acquire a life.

Linocut prints are made by cutting into the surface of specially-made linoleum, using knives and specialist tools. Printing ink is rolled onto the top surface of the lino, and a piece of paper is laid onto the inky surface. The back of the paper is then rubbed gently but firmly (by hand or with a spoon-like implement), until ink has transferred from the lino to the paper. This is a relief printing technique.

Limited edition prints are made in editions specified by the artist, and each print is numbered (often on the front under the image, but sometimes on the back). For example, a print numbered 6/20 would be the sixth print in an edition of 20. Sometimes prints are marked AP, which means 'artist's proof'.
