A CHILD IN A LANDSCAPE

The Blue Swimming Costume The Yellow Shorts The Pink Hat The Grey Trousers Monument Repeating History Irretrievable Time

These paintings explore the relationship between landscape and memory, by placing images of a girl - myself - in different surroundings. But where a photograph from the time might have shown the grey English seaside or an urban back garden, the child has been transported to colourful, unpopulated, exotic, rural, fictional or ambiguous landscapes. Our recollections of childhood are compiled from strange mixtures of the real and imaginative worlds that we inhabited as children.
